Indian vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur created a history as she has become first Indian women player to sign a deal with a BBL franchise for Sydney Thunder. Kaur will be part of defending champions team in the BBL which is scheduled to be played in December-January.
Sydney Thunder was not the lone team who offered a contract to Kaur as she had earlier received offers from at least three franchises. She chose to play for the defending champions.
Harmanpreet was scored 89 runs and also took 7 wickets in four matches in recent World T20. Though her all round performance could not turn the fortunes for Indian team to reach to second round but she got a BBL contract.
Kaur had a season in Australia earlier this year in January, When Indian women team won first time any series in Australia, as she was the highest run scorer for Indian team despite missing a game. She scored 70 runs in two innings with the strike rate of 145.83.
Not only women but she is also first Indian player to play in BBL as BCCI policies do not allow any Indian player in foreign T20 leagues.
Harmanpreet Kaur is not the first women cricketer to be offered a contract as earlier Indian captain Mithali Raj and fast bowler Jhulan Goswami were offered a contract last year for the same but they had declined the offer as BCCI rejected the permission to do so.
Sydney Thunder will kick off their campaign against the Sydney Sixers on December 6.
