Islamabad United beat Quetta Gladiators to become first champion of PSL

Islamabad United won the first edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL) , they defeated Quetta Gladiators by 6 wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

Misbah choose to bowl first after winning the toss and the Gladiators,  scores on the help of half-tons by Ahmed Shehzad (64) and Kumar Sangakkara (55) to 174-7 in their 20 overs.

In answer of 175 run chase, Dwayne Smith (73) and Brad Haddin (61) score to put up an 85-run partnership under pressure for the second wicket to help their team to finishing line.

“Team played professionally,” said Misbah in the post-match interview.

“One hundred seventy-five is a big target in the final under pressure. We didn’t want to lose a lot of wickets inside the first ten overs. The bowlers also did well to restrict Quetta as they looked to go past 200 at a point.”

“We wanted the PSL to happen for the last three years and we knew that it will be a hit. PSL chairman Najam Sethi and the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) efforts are commendable.”

With the victory, Islamabad bagged a $500,000 winning purse and the coveted ‘Shooting Star’ trophy. Quetta will take home a winning prize of $200,000 as the runner-ups.
