That is according to Journalist Emanuele Giulianelli, who claims a meeting took place in central London yesterday.

Real Madrid have been linked with a summer swoop for Payet following his impressive debut season at Upton Park.

West Ham are desperate to keep hold of their key man, who finished as the club’s top scorer and leading assist maker last term.

A sensational start to his Euro 2016 campaign with France, netting twice in three games, has subsequently raised discussions around his future.

Italian journalist Giulianelli tweeted yesterday: "Payets agent is meeting a Real Madrid representative in central London today."

Payet arrived in east London just last summer from Marseille, with the 29-year-old costing just £10.7million.

West Ham tied their international star down to a new contract in February, which keeps him at the club until 2021.

However, it is claimed by Spanish newspaper ABC that Payet has told Madrid he is interested in joining them and idol Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu.

The Hammers are said to have slapped a £60m price-tag on Payet though in a bid to fend off interest from Europe’s biggest clubs.

While his age could deter Madrid due to the lack of a sell-on fee, his form in England and at the Euros has the La Liga side keen.

Payet himself has indicated his move to West Ham has helped improve his game due to the level of competition in England compared to France.

“The level of the Premier League has helped me to get closer to international level,” Payet said. “When you play in England there are no easy games.

“It’s a very physical league, sometimes pushing you to the limit. Every two weeks you play against a top European club, you have to be at the top level to compete.”
