Manchester United are set to confirm the arrival of Armenian midfielder Heinrich Mkhitaryan from Dortmund to join striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and defender Eric Bailly, are confident of beating Real Madrid to the signature of £80m for Pogba from Juventus.
“We decided four targets. From these four, we have three and when we have the fourth, I breathe,” said Mourinho. “We made a nucleus of four positions to give a certain balance to the squad, to give a certain push in terms of quality.
“We are not going to get the fourth on the 31st of August – no way. We will get the fourth before that.”
Mourinho hopes to tie up a deal for France midfielder Paul Pogba shortly, believes it was a mistake for England to use Rooney in a playmaker role at the Euros.
“It is normal a player changes a bit with age but there is something that will never change, which is the natural appetite to put the ball in the net,” he said.
“Maybe he is not a striker any more but with me he will never be a No6 playing 50 metres away from the goal.
“You can tell me his pass is amazing – yes his pass is amazing – but my pass is also amazing without pressure.
“There are many players with a great pass but to be there and put the ball in the net is the most difficult thing to find so for me he will be a 9, a 10, a nine and a half but not a 6, not even an 8.”
